Peaceful protest is a vital means for people to communicate their views to lawmakers and shape public policy, and criminalizing it would turn citizenship from an engaged, participatory role into a passive one, weakening communities and democratic accountability. If we start treating peaceful dissent as a crime, where does that path end?
