I lived in the Netherlands now for 2 years I hope you will hear a foreigner’s opinion. I think banning drugs is the opposite of trying to create a safe environment. The knowledge that most people poses about drugs is mostly misinformed, as throughout the years the drugs have always been banned before they could be researched thoroughly, one of the examples is LSD, that's why majority of people know nothing about drugs and refuse to educate themselves. People are stepping up to inform the world by breaking the stereotypes of drugs that they are not bad but are simply tools that can be misused all that depends is understanding about them. The current situation of legalization of marijuana around the world and the positive movement towards the legalization of psychedelics shows that we are advancing further as a society. So instead of sweeping them under the rug, we could keep on advancing and breaking the stereotypes and misinformation that people have about drugs. In my opinion the way to keep people from misusing drugs is to research and educate people about them.
Banning drugs doesn’t mean that people will stop using them, it only means that people won't be able to buy from a safe environment knowing what they are buying. So many deaths just because buying illegally is a huge risk to take as you deal with the risk of getting something other than you were buying and dealing with dangerous people. Biggest problem is addiction to drugs and one of the causes is misinformation, as people don't know the proper way to use them. Mental illness is the cause of addiction, therefore informing and focusing on improving the mental health of people is the way to a better world. Only these days mental problems are receiving more spotlight and people start acknowledging them and work towards being healthy. I believe that the current situation of drugs being "underground" and minority of people knowing about them is not the solution, implementing new systems, strategies to better implement drugs into the society is the answer.
I love the open-mindedness that this country has, you're one of the most advanced countries because you are innovative and embrace the creativeness of your people. Instead of taking the easy way out use the creativeness that your culture portraits and deal with the problem in a different way. There will always be wrong people and the way to prevent mistakes and create a cooperative society is to educate them and implement new ways of thinking.
