I am an international professional living and working in the Netherlands. Like many other expats, I chose this country for its openness to highly skilled migrants and its strong values of diversity, innovation, and global collaboration. I’ve established a BV, bought a house and now opening a store in Utrecht. The proposed increase in the residency requirement for citizenship from five to ten years is deeply concerning for me and my partner. This change would create uncertainty for many skilled migrants who have built their lives, finances, and long-term plans around the current system. It could also reduce the Netherlands' appeal to international talent at a time when innovation and expertise are vital to the nation's future competitiveness. A stable and balanced immigration policy is key to preserving the Netherlands' reputation as an open and progressive country. I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal and retain the existing five-year pathway to citizenship, which fosters integration, stability, and mutual commitment between skilled migrants and Dutch society.
