I am writing to respectfully request that the proposed extension of the naturalization period to 10 years be implemented in a fair, non-discriminatory manner, taking into account the dignity and aspirations of individuals who have already chosen to build their lives in the Netherlands.
In 2021, after completing my Master’s degree in Germany, I made a deliberate and thoughtful decision to accept a job offer in the Netherlands, prioritizing the country’s reputation for inclusivity and its then 5-year naturalization policy. At the time, I felt confident and proud of my decision, leaving behind opportunities in Germany without regret.
Since relocating, I have done my utmost to integrate into Dutch society. I have invested in learning the language, purchased a home, contributed diligently through taxes, and begun shifting my long-term financial plans to align with a future in the Netherlands. My intention has always been to make this country my permanent home.
However, the proposed change to the naturalization period has caused me significant concern. If applied retroactively, it places individuals like myself in a difficult and uncertain position. While many of my peers who remained in Germany have already secured permanent residency or citizenship, I find myself facing the prospect of an additional five-year wait. This unexpected change creates considerable stress and leaves me feeling vulnerable, without a clear path forward.
I fully respect the authority of the Dutch government to revise immigration and naturalization policies. However, I kindly urge you to consider the impact on individuals who are already residing in the Netherlands and have made life-altering decisions based on the current framework. Implementing the new policy for future arrivals would allow those individuals to make informed choices before relocating, ensuring fairness and transparency.
