When I migrated to the Netherlands, I also had the option of Canada and Australia. The hospitality of the Dutch people about citizenship, and the 30% ruling, convinced me to come to the Netherlands. I imagined myself becoming Dutch and integrating with society as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, I bought a house and made all my future plans based on becoming Dutch in 5 years. But the new rules made me worried, and I lost trust in the government. If I had known about this change before making the decision to come to the Netherlands, my destination country would have been different.

Now, the discussion is about 10 years, but there is no guarantee that after 10 years the rules will be the same, and that I will get my citizenship after staying and investing more in the Netherlands.

As a highly skilled worker migrant, my expectation is that the rule should stay the same for people like me, who migrated under the old rules. The new rule should only apply to new migrants who want to come to the Netherlands after it is introduced.
