I'm an international student who came to this country with the intention of staying and becoming fully integrated into Dutch society. Especially for those from the Global South, who come here with the hope of living in a more tolerant and accepting environment than back home, who already face a myriad of challenges in finding housing, employment, affording expensive language classes and cultivating a sense of belonging, an increase in the naturalisation requirement is an unnecessary further punishment to those of us who have been trying so hard to make the Netherlands our home. I am against this proposal and ask that the requirement for naturalisation stays at 5 years.
