I am writing to express my deep concern about the Netherlands’ potential change to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years.
I have lived and worked in Hong Kong, Paris, and now Amsterdam. My family and I chose the Netherlands because we believe it represents the values of liberalism, freedom, and modernity. We have built our lives here — I work for a Dutch company, we are raising our children here, and we have bought a home with the intention of building a long-term future in this country.
The proposed change to extend the naturalization period places families like mine in a very complex and vulnerable situation. With the recent rise in right-wing political influence, this shift would deepen the divide between long-term residents and citizens. Our children, who grow up here, go to school here, and feel Dutch in every way, may remain legally foreigners for much longer. This could lead to situations where they are seen as “outsiders” among their peers, increasing the risk of exclusion or even bullying.
As someone who contributes professionally and socially to Dutch society, I also fear that such a change could embolden negative attitudes in the workplace and in daily life. I already sense that extending the naturalization period may make us more vulnerable to discrimination or racist comments, as it signals that we do not truly belong, even after many years of contribution.
Expats and international residents bring diversity, talent, and economic value to the Netherlands. We help make this country more dynamic, innovative, and open-minded. Extending the path to citizenship risks alienating people who genuinely want to be part of Dutch society and who already demonstrate their commitment every day.
I sincerely urge you not to change the naturalization requirement from five to ten years. This change would not strengthen the Netherlands — it would divide it. Please continue to uphold the values that make this country a beacon for people like us: openness, fairness, and inclusion.
Thank you for your attention and consideration.
