I decided to move to the Netherlands and invest in my future here based on the law that was in place at the time, which allowed naturalization after 5 years of residence. This rule was an important factor in my decision to come to this country. I invested a considerable amount of money in my education and committed myself to learning the Dutch language with the clear expectation that I could apply for a passport after 5 years.
Had I known from the beginning that the naturalization period would be extended to 10 years, I would have chosen a different country—such as Switzerland, with its stronger economy, or Germany, where tuition fees are significantly lower.
For this reason, I believe the new law should not be applied retroactively to those who entered the Netherlands under the previous 5-year rule. People like me made life-changing decisions based on the regulations at the time, and it would only be fair that our applications for naturalization are evaluated according to those conditions.
