Dear policymakers,

We are a non-EU highly skilled migrant family who have been living and working in the Netherlands for 3 years. We have built our lives here, bought a home, and made long-term plans to stay and contribute to Dutch society.

The proposed extension of the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years — especially if applied retroactively — would have a deeply discouraging impact on families like ours. It would create long-term uncertainty, reduce motivation to integrate, and make the Netherlands less attractive for international talent.

For families who have already settled here, such a change means living for many years with the fear that a temporary job loss could undo everything — our residence rights, our stability, and our sense of security. We do not want to live another decade in constant uncertainty and stress after committing our future to this country.

We kindly urge the government to:

Keep the current 5-year requirement for those already residing in the Netherlands before the new law takes effect; and

Reconsider whether doubling the waiting time truly supports integration and inclusion.

Thank you for considering our feedback and for taking into account the real-life impact on families like ours.

Sincerely,
Demet Dinc Sonmez & Ozgur Sonmez
Highly Skilled Migrant Family living in the Netherlands since July 2022.
