The proposal to extend the period of naturalization from 5 years to 10 years should NOT be enacted into law.
The main reason for this is sovereign economics and preserving the best interests of the Dutch population.
Highly skilled immigrants help keep a country relevant and competitive on the international stage. This results in more prosperity for the local Dutch population through greater welfare, better healthcare, vibrant property and stock markets, and a higher standard of living.
The economies of small nations like Singapore, UAE, UK (and large nations like the USA) have grown richer when local talent was mixed with foreign talent, creating greater prosperity and tax revenue for locals.
The current 5 year naturalization period is a good incentive to bring in the skilled foreign talent we need. Without it, we lose this talent to other nations competing for the same talent. And without a regular influx of good talent and foreign capital, we risk becoming uncompetitive.
Prosperity is earned by competing on the international stage, not by restricting free-market mechanisms internally.
Ofcourse economics is not the full story. From a societal and cultural standpoint too, and preservation of Dutch heritage, we are nowhere near a tipping point where we need to worry about ‘foreigners in our country’. The social fabric of our country is very stable (and very Dutch).
