I strongly oppose the proposal to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years. This change would slow down integration rather than promote it, by keeping well-integrated residents in uncertainty and exclusion for longer. It punishes those who follow the rules, work, and contribute to Dutch society, while offering no clear evidence that a longer waiting time improves social cohesion or security. Citizenship is a key step in belonging, participation, and civic responsibility — delaying it undermines those goals. Instead of increasing the waiting period, the government should focus on improving integration support and maintaining fair, achievable pathways to full citizenship.
