We had to leave Turkey with my husband and seven-month-old son on June 12, 2023. In Turkey we were at great risk of arrest because of our political views.
We came to the Netherlands, a state governed by the rule of law that respects human rights, and applied for asylum.
After 26 months, we finally received residence permit on August 18, 2025. We also had a daughter in the AZC, who is now 10 months old. We will be moving into our new home soon, and our integration process will begin thereafter.
We want to be useful to this country that has accepted us by completing the integration process.
However, the bill proposed by the Dutch Government to increase the period for citizenship from five to ten years, concerns us.
While we want to live here safely and contribute to this country, we still feel uncertain about our future.
When formulating policy, I ask you to consider those like us who are trying to escape oppression and build a new life in the Netherlands.
Yours faithfully,
Melek Yildiz
