I believe this proposed change is problematic in several ways. Contrary to popular belief, increasing the required residency period from 5 to 10 years will undermine the development of a sense of belonging. Ten years is an excessively long time, and many individuals will be discouraged from making long-term plans under such uncertainty.
The Netherlands attracts a significant number of highly skilled migrants (HSM), particularly young and middle-aged professionals. These individuals are modern, well-educated, and globally mobile. Extending the naturalisation period risks driving them to choose other countries with more inclusive and timely integration policies.
If the intention behind this proposal is to strengthen integration, a more nuanced approach should be considered—perhaps tailoring the duration based on applicant categories. However, in any case, a blanket 10-year requirement is disproportionate and counterproductive.
