An expat household with at least one HSM salary pays more taxes comparing to average Dutch household. These people has no right to vote in national elections until they complete naturalisation and gain citizenship. This means they have no right to a take part in elections and contribute to political decisions by voting for political parties. This will also cause an issue in the long term because while their contribution is mandatory for the public funds, they have limited right to benefit or at least have a vote on them. Don’t forget that the Netherlands are in need of more highly skilled migrants and there is a competition for landing more expats among developed countries and benefits for expats in the NL are disappearing one by one. Integration will happen only if you keep people happy for living in the Netherlands. Otherwise, they will have to look for their other options. This is a populist proposal, not going to make any benefit for Dutch society and should be cancelled as soon as possible. Populism is killing participatory democracies all around the world. As you can see in this case, the Dutch government would like to benefit from expats as labor force and charge them taxes, when it comes to their naturalisation and participation in democracy, they aren’t happy about it. This is a hypocritical situation and the Netherlands will suffer from this decision if it becomes the new law.
