I would like to respectfully express my concern regarding the proposed extension of the naturalization period in the Netherlands from 5 years to 10 years.
The Netherlands has long been recognized as an open and welcoming country that attracts people from around the world for its strong economy, inclusive values, and excellent career opportunities. Immigrants have significantly contributed to the Dutch economy and society, and maintaining a fair and efficient path to naturalization is essential to continuing this success.
Extending the naturalization period may reduce the country’s appeal to skilled workers and long-term contributors, potentially impacting economic growth and social cohesion. A longer waiting time could also delay integration and reduce the sense of belonging among those who are eager to fully participate in Dutch society.
If the government sees a strong need to implement such a change, I would kindly recommend that it apply only to new immigrants who choose to relocate to the Netherlands after the policy is enacted — "Not to those who are already living, working, and contributing to the country under the current legal framework. Applying the change retroactively could be perceived as unfair and discouraging to individuals who have made life decisions based on the existing rules".
In light of this, I strongly encourage maintaining the 5-year naturalization period for current residents, or alternatively, ensuring that any changes are implemented with fairness and respect for those already building their lives in the Netherlands.
