Dear Madam and Sir,
I would like to raise my concerns about the proposed extension of the naturalisation period in the Netherlands from 5 years to 10 years.
As a highly skilled immigrant who was welcomed to the Netherlands for my professional expertise, I have committed myself fully to integrating into Dutch society. Like many others in my position, I have invested in learning the Dutch language, successfully completed integration exams, and actively contributed to the community through work, volunteering, and social participation.
The possibility of becoming a Dutch citizen after 5 years has always represented a fair and achievable path towards stability, belonging, and equal participation. Extending this period to 10 years would not only create a prolonged sense of uncertainty but could also discourage skilled professionals and their families from choosing the Netherlands as their long-term home.
It is crucial to acknowledge the efforts of residents who are already on the path to naturalisation under the current rules. I respectfully ask that transitional measures are put in place so that those who have already invested years of effort towards integration are not suddenly subjected to significantly longer waiting times.
The Netherlands benefits greatly from attracting and retaining highly skilled immigrants. To remain competitive internationally and to ensure fairness for those who are already integrated, I strongly urge the government to maintain the current 5-year rule for existing residents and introduce exceptions or flexible arrangements for highly skilled immigrants and their families.
Thank you for your attention and consideration.
