I firmly oppose extending the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years, as this change would unfairly impact immigrants, international students and skilled migrants. Many already meet integration requirements such as language proficiency, social and professional connections, and cultural understanding, yet this bill would delay their access to full participation in Dutch society.
By extending the timeline, the proposal deepens existing inequalities and denies people from less privileged backgrounds the legal stability and political rights needed for genuine integration and belonging. Citizenship is not simply a legal formality but a foundation for trust and inclusion. Changing the rules for those who have already invested in Dutch life under the current system is unjust, undermines confidence in government institutions, and risks alienating exactly the people who are contributing economically, socially, and culturally.
