Changing the Dutch citizenship requirement from five to ten years would be a serious step backward for an open and knowledge-based country like the Netherlands. Highly skilled migrants come here to contribute, innovate, and build a life not just to work temporarily. When people must wait a decade to feel fully accepted, they lose motivation to integrate, invest, and stay long term. It sends the message that they are welcome to work but not to belong. This would make the Netherlands less attractive compared to other EU countries that offer a faster, fairer path to citizenship, and in the end, the economy will lose valuable talent, creativity, and stability.
