Raising the naturalization period to 10 years unfairly penalizes those who have already spent many years living, integrating, and contributing in the Netherlands, as it extends their wait for citizenship under new rules that did not exist when they first arrived; for these long-term residents, this change represents a retroactive shift in the legal and social expectations they relied on, adding unnecessary uncertainty and delaying access to rights, opportunities, and a sense of belonging that citizenship provides, even though they have already shown commitment to Dutch society and fulfilled the requirements that were previously in place.
