Dear Sir or Madam,

We were surprised to learn about the proposal to extend the residency requirement for obtaining Dutch citizenship from five to ten years.

As someone who has been contributing to the Dutch labor market for nearly four years as a highly skilled worker, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact such a change could have on the economy and the country’s ability to attract and retain talent.

Even under the current system, many employers are already struggling to fill vacancies locally. Extending the path to citizenship would likely make it even more difficult to attract and keep qualified professionals. It is also worth noting that, contrary to this proposal, Germany has recently shortened its naturalization period to five years. As a result, highly educated professionals who could otherwise contribute meaningfully to the Dutch economy may instead choose destinations that offer a clearer and more achievable path to belonging.

This would have long-term negative consequences for the Netherlands. Highly skilled migrants are typically well-educated, motivated to integrate, and eager to contribute to Dutch society. Creating an environment that welcomes and retains such individuals ultimately benefits the country as a whole.

Many of us have left behind our families, friends, and entire lives to build a future here. All we ask in return is a sense of stability and security. Changing the citizenship requirement while people are already living and working in the country has understandably caused deep concern, disappointment, and uncertainty.

Moreover, extending the naturalization period may discourage integration rather than promote it. Many people are likely to delay learning the language or investing in deeper participation in society if the path to citizenship feels too distant or uncertain.

We respectfully request that the potential implications of this proposal be carefully considered and that no further steps be taken to implement it.

Yours sincerely
