I strongly oppose the proposed extension of the naturalization period from five to ten years, due to its adverse impacts on both Dutch society and immigrants. The following points outline the key negative consequences of this policy change:
1. This policy will inevitably discourage non-European investors who view citizenship as an essential safeguard for their long-term business and family interests. As a result, foreign investment could drop sharply, undermining innovation, job creation, and the broader Dutch economy.
2. High-skilled immigrants will increasingly choose other countries to work and settle in, where the path to citizenship is shorter and more predictable. As a result, the Netherlands will lose a key competitive advantage in attracting global talent, particularly in sectors such as technology, research, and innovation.
3.It is deeply unfair that entrepreneurs and skilled workers who have already been living and contributing to the Netherlands for two to four years now face this sudden change in naturalization rules. These individuals came to the country with trust in its legal stability and fairness. Altering the conditions midway not only harms their personal and professional plans, but also risks pushing them to relocate to other countries.
Such a policy undermines the Netherlands’ reputation for justice, human dignity, and reliability. It may also damage public trust in political and parliamentary decision-making, weaken the country’s humanitarian image, and negatively affect its social cohesion.
4. It will create a deep and lasting gap between citizens and long-term residents, reducing the pace of social integration. By delaying access to citizenship, immigrants will feel excluded from full participation in Dutch society for a much longer time. This separation can lead to social tension, decreased community trust, and other adverse effects on social cohesion.
