I strongly disagree with the blanket approach of this proposal to extend the naturalization period for Dutch citizenship. As a highly skilled immigrant in the Netherlands, I am eager to become a Dutch citizen. I have been working here for almost four years, contributing to the government through taxes and generating income for my company. Many others in my position are similarly integrated into Dutch society.
Highly skilled migrants are not the category that lacks integration. We actively contribute to making the Netherlands competitive, rather than simply benefiting from it. If this proposal becomes law, it will make life more difficult for me and other highly skilled migrants. In the future, highly skilled migrants may choose to contribute to other countries instead of the Netherlands.
I urge lawmakers to consider differentiated rules for different categories of immigrants. One solution does not fit all, just as one key does not open every door. I strongly recommend that this proposal be revoked and replaced with a better version that takes into account the specific conditions and contributions of different groups.
