Dear Sir/Madam,
I respectfully urge you to preserve the current five-year naturalization period for highly skilled migrants. This group, employed by recognized Dutch companies, enters the Netherlands legally and contributes directly to the country’s economy, knowledge base, and social fabric. Their situation is fundamentally different from that of asylum seekers, and it should be recognized as such.
Extending the naturalization requirement to ten years for highly skilled migrants would disregard the proven integration, stability, and commitment they demonstrate within the existing five-year timeframe. A five-year period already provides sufficient opportunity to assess one’s participation in Dutch society, while also encouraging long-term engagement and a sense of belonging. Extending it to ten years risks discouraging those very contributions.
It is also essential that legislative changes do not retroactively disadvantage individuals who are currently building their lives in the Netherlands under the expectation of the five-year rule. Altering the criteria midway would undermine trust in the legal framework and penalize those who have made personal and professional commitments based on the law as it stands.
For these reasons, I respectfully request that the government maintain the five-year naturalization period for highly skilled migrants, and that individuals already residing here under current provisions be safeguarded against retroactive changes. This approach would ensure fairness, consistency, and continued mutual benefit between the Netherlands and the knowledge workers who choose to invest their future here.
