Subject: Reflections on the Rule of Law and Recent Legislative Developments

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a former judge from Turkey who has sought asylum in the Netherlands. I made this decision out of deep respect for this country’s long-standing commitment to democracy and the rule of law, as well as due to the political pressure I faced in Turkey.

Nevertheless, I have recently observed an increasingly negative public discourse surrounding refugees, accompanied by legislative proposals that, in my legal view, risk undermining the principles of the rule of law.

This development reminds me of the gradual erosion of judicial independence and legal safeguards that occurred in Turkey through a series of seemingly minor legal amendments. I sincerely hope the Netherlands will not follow a similar path.

I remain confident that the Dutch Parliament will uphold the core values of justice, equality, and human rights that define this nation’s legal tradition.
