Dear members of the consultation committee,
I am a professional who came to the Netherlands for work and to build a stable, meaningful future here. I would like to express my opposition to extending the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years.
Many of us who move here leave behind comfort, family, and familiar surroundings to start a new life in the Netherlands. We come with the intention to integrate, learn the language, and contribute to society. The current 5-year rule gives us a fair and motivating goal — it helps us stay committed to becoming part of Dutch life.
Extending this to 10 years would make the process unnecessarily long and discouraging. It would delay people’s sense of belonging and stability, even for those who already work, pay taxes, and actively participate in the community.
It’s also worth noting that not everyone who has lived here for more than 5 years becomes a Dutch citizen, so keeping the current rule will not cause an overwhelming number of applications — it will simply keep the process fair.
The 5-year term is balanced, reasonable, and supports true integration.
Regards,
A working professional living in the Netherlands, aspiring to become a Dutch citizen
