To whom it may concern,
I would like to express my objection to the proposal to extend the required residence period for Dutch nationality from 5 to 10 years.
This change would be unfair to many people who have already built their lives and long-term plans in the Netherlands based on the current 5-year rule. Many migrants make important life decisions — such as studying, working, or starting families — with the expectation that they can apply for citizenship after five years of residence and integration. Changing this rule so drastically would disrupt these plans and create a sense of insecurity and discouragement.
Moreover, a “one-size-fits-all” extension does not recognize the efforts of those who actively integrate — learning the Dutch language, participating in society, and contributing to the community. A more balanced and fair approach would be to maintain the 5-year rule or, if changes are made, introduce a gradual system:
For people who show strong integration efforts (language proficiency, civic participation, work or study), the waiting time could remain at 5 years.
For others who make less effort, a longer period could apply.
This would encourage integration and reward commitment, instead of penalizing those who are already contributing positively to Dutch society.
