Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to express concern about the proposal to extend the residency requirement for naturalization from five to ten years. While I understand the goal of promoting integration, applying this change without a transitional arrangement would be unfair to those who built their lives in the Netherlands under the current five-year rule.
My partner and I moved here in 2023 after carefully reviewing the law, with the understanding that we could apply for citizenship after five years. Since then, we have integrated actively: learning the language, working, paying taxes, and buying a home.
Changing the rule retroactively would undermine trust and penalize residents acting in good faith. I therefore urge the government to:
1. Apply the ten-year requirement only to newcomers; and
2. Protect the expectations of current residents under the five-year rule.
Fairness and legal certainty are essential for genuine integration and mutual trust.
Yours sincerely,
