This rule will significantly harm individuals who came to the Netherlands to study or work, many of whom positively contribute to the country’s society and economy. It would be deeply unfair and disadvantageous to apply this change to people who arrived before the rule was introduced, as they made important life decisions based on the existing five-year policy for obtaining citizenship. Implementing this rule without considering their situation would severely disrupt their plans and future prospects.

A fair and balanced approach would be to include an exception for those who are already close to fulfilling the five-year requirement, allowing them to proceed under the previous policy. The new ten-year requirement should apply only to individuals who arrive in the Netherlands after the rule comes into effect.
