Please Oppose Extending the Path to Dutch Citizenship from 5 to 10 Years
I would like to express my deep concern about the proposal to extend the required residency period for obtaining Dutch citizenship from five to ten years.
Such a change would cause tremendous stress and uncertainty for many international residents who genuinely wish to build their lives and futures in the Netherlands. This includes highly educated individuals who study, work, and contribute meaningfully to Dutch society.
As international students, we pay tuition fees many times higher than EU citizens. After graduation, we continue to give back through our professional work, taxes, and creative or scientific contributions. Extending the path to citizenship feels deeply unfair and discriminatory toward those who have already invested greatly—financially, emotionally, and socially—in the Netherlands.
Dutch citizenship represents stability, belonging, and equality. Delaying this right to ten years would discourage talented people from staying, weaken their sense of security, and undermine the inclusivity that the Netherlands has long been admired for.
We respectfully ask the government to reconsider this proposal and keep the five-year requirement for Dutch citizenship. It is a fair and balanced standard that supports integration, motivation, and mutual trust
