Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to respectfully express my objection to the proposal to extend the residence period required for Dutch naturalisation from 5 years to 10 years.
As a highly skilled migrant, I chose the Netherlands with the understanding that after 5 years of legal residence and integration, I would be eligible to apply for Dutch citizenship. This was an important factor in my decision to build my life, career, and future here. Changing the rules now would create great uncertainty for me and many others who have invested in the Netherlands under the current conditions.
Extending the naturalisation period to 10 years risks discouraging talented professionals from choosing the Netherlands as a long-term home. It may also slow integration by delaying access to full civic participation, such as voting rights and equal opportunities in society.
I fully respect the need for thoughtful migration policy, but I believe that integration and commitment to Dutch society are better encouraged by supporting migrants to participate sooner, rather than by extending waiting times.
For these reasons, I kindly ask you to reconsider and withdraw this proposal. I believe the current 5-year requirement strikes a fair balance between integration, commitment, and opportunity.
Thank you for considering my concerns.
Respectfully,
