As a highly skilled migrant (HSM), I would like to share my perspective on the proposal to extend the naturalisation period.

HSM migrants contribute significantly to the Dutch economy by filling skill gaps in the local job market. These skills are not only scarce but also essential for driving innovation, strengthening knowledge industries, and supporting the broader economic ecosystem. By attracting and retaining such talent, the Netherlands positions itself as an attractive destination for multinational companies to invest, set up operations, and create long-term value.

Bundling HSMs into the same category as all other residence permit holders overlooks this unique contribution. I recommend that highly skilled migrants be considered separately, with a pathway that reflects their economic and social impact. This would also send a strong signal internationally that the Netherlands fosters a welcoming and competitive environment for global talent.

In today’s geopolitical climate, it is especially important for Europe to build resilience and reduce dependency on US multinational organizations. A strong base of highly skilled talent in the Netherlands helps achieve this goal. By enabling HSMs to integrate faster (after 5 years) through a fairer naturalisation process, the country can secure long-term economic growth, innovation, and self-reliance.

I urge policymakers to acknowledge the specific role of highly skilled migrants and avoid a one-size-fits-all extension of naturalisation timelines.
