As the spouse of an international student who moved to the Netherlands with the hope of building our life and future here, I would like to object to the proposal to extend the naturalisation period from 5 years to 10 years.
When we decided to move to the Netherlands, we did so with the understanding that after 5 years of living, studying, and contributing to Dutch society, we would be eligible to apply for citizenship. This plan guided many of our personal and financial decisions. Extending the waiting period to 10 years would make it extremely difficult for us as a family to remain motivated and committed to building our future here.
Moreover, this change risks discouraging many international families from coming to the Netherlands at all. It creates uncertainty and makes the country less attractive compared to other European destinations where integration and citizenship are more accessible.
At the very least, I believe that this new law should not apply to people who already made the decision to come to the Netherlands under the current 5-year rule. Changing the rules for existing residents would be unfair and damaging to trust in the Dutch system.
I kindly urge the government to reconsider this proposal, or to exclude those who are already living in the Netherlands from its effect.
