I don’t support extending the naturalization period to 10 years. Five years is already sufficient for people to settle and integrate. Many countries, like Germany, France, and Belgium, allow naturalization after 5 years, and this has not caused problems with loyalty or social cohesion. Research also shows that people who apply after 5 years are often highly motivated to contribute to society. If the goal is to ensure commitment, there are better ways to achieve it than simply prolonging the waiting period. For instance, raising language requirements, adding cultural or civic knowledge exams, or even requiring community engagement could strengthen integration without creating unnecessary delays. Extending the period risks frustration, lowers motivation, and could drive skilled migrants to move to countries with more reasonable timelines, ultimately harming the society that wants their contribution.
