Please let me clarify why extending the citizenship waiting period in the Netherlands is a problem :
- Delays integration : Longer waiting times hinder immigrants from fully participating in Dutch society.
- Limits access to rights : Citizenship grants voting rights, EU mobility, and social protections - delaying it postpones these benefits.
- Increases vulnerability : Without citizenship, immigrants remain dependent on residence permits and face more legal uncertainty.
- Discriminatory impact : Stricter requirements (e.g. language tests) disproportionately affect older and less-educated individuals.
- Contradicts European norms : Many EU countries offer citizenship lower than 10 years; extending it to 10 years in the Netherlands is seen as regressive.
- The Netherlands also risks losing its pool of skilled migrants and potential investments to other countries.
