I would like to respectfully express my strong concern regarding the proposed extension of the naturalization term from five to ten years. For many immigrants, the opportunity to become Dutch citizens is not only a legal formality but also an essential step in fully integrating into Dutch society, contributing to the community, and building a meaningful future here.
Extending the naturalization period to ten years creates significant barriers for thousands of people who are willing and eager to embrace Dutch culture, values, and responsibilities. Becoming a citizen earlier provides stability, legal certainty, and a stronger sense of belonging, which are all crucial for successful integration.
Becoming a citizen earlier allows immigrants to feel fully accepted in Dutch society, which strengthens their sense of belonging. Prolonging the wait delays this important psychological milestone and hinders integration.
Citizenship grants equal rights in work, education, and political participation. Without it, immigrants remain in a weaker position for years, often feeling like second-class residents.
Access to stable legal status helps families make long-term decisions about careers, housing, and raising children in the Netherlands.
The current five-year term already strikes a fair balance: it allows immigrants enough time to demonstrate their commitment to the Netherlands while also enabling them to participate as equal members of society without unnecessary delays. Increasing the waiting period risks discouraging integration and prolonging feelings of exclusion, which runs counter to the Netherlands’ long-standing tradition of inclusivity and cultural openness.
For these reasons, I kindly urge that the government maintain the current five-year naturalization term and avoid removing or overly restricting exceptions that support vulnerable groups. Keeping the path to citizenship accessible is vital not only for immigrants but also for the strength and cohesion of Dutch society as a whole.
