I formally express my concern and objection regarding the proposal to extend the minimum residency requirement for naturalization in the Netherlands from five to ten years.
As an expatriate who has made the Netherlands my home, I have invested significant effort in integrating into Dutch society. I have learned the language, embraced the culture, and contributed to the economy through my professional work. The current five-year requirement already ensures that applicants demonstrate a meaningful and sustained connection to the country.
Extending this period to ten years would have a deeply personal impact on individuals like myself. For example, I have been planning to apply for Dutch citizenship next year, which would allow me to fully participate in civic life, including voting in national elections and feeling a stronger sense of belonging. Delaying this by an additional five years would not only be disheartening but would also affect my long-term plans, such as securing stable residency for my family and accessing certain career opportunities that require EU citizenship.
Moreover, this change could discourage skilled professionals from choosing the Netherlands as a long-term destination, potentially affecting the country’s competitiveness in attracting global talent. It may also send an unintended message that integration efforts are not being recognized or valued, despite the significant contributions made by many expats.
I respectfully urge the Ministry to reconsider this proposal and instead explore ways to support and encourage integration without extending the timeline for naturalization. A balanced approach that acknowledges the efforts of long-term residents while maintaining the integrity of the naturalization process would better serve both the interests of the state and its diverse communities.
Thank you for considering my perspective. I remain hopeful that the government will take into account the voices of those who are committed to building their lives in the Netherlands.
