As an expat who has made the Netherlands my home, I am concerned about the proposal to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years. Five years is already sufficient for newcomers to prove their commitment, integrate, and contribute meaningfully to Dutch society. I bring value to the Dutch economy by contributing my skills and experience, as do many other expats. Doubling the wait delays the stability and sense of belonging that citizenship brings and risks discouraging talented individuals from staying in the long term. Citizenship is not just a legal status. It is equality and participation. Extending the term risks creating permanent outsiders rather than fostering inclusion.
