I moved to the Netherlands in November 2022 as a highly skilled migrant, with the clear understanding that after five years of legal residence and successful integration, I would be eligible to apply for Dutch citizenship. That expectation shaped many of my long-term decisions — from learning the language to building a life here.

The recent proposal to double the naturalisation period to ten years is deeply concerning. While I understand the government’s right to revise policies, this change would unfairly impact those who are already well along the path — especially individuals who have completed the required exams and are simply waiting to reach the five-year mark. For us, this isn’t just a delay — it’s a major setback that disregards the effort and commitment we’ve already shown.

It’s important to recognise that many of us have made serious investments — emotionally, financially, and professionally — based on the current rules. Changing those rules mid-process feels like a breach of trust. It risks discouraging skilled professionals who have chosen the Netherlands not just as a workplace, but as a future home.

I urge the government to consider a fair and reasonable transition plan. Those who are already close to meeting the current requirements — and who have taken all the necessary steps to prepare for naturalisation — should not be penalised by a sudden policy shift. A grandfathering clause or transitional arrangement would go a long way in preserving trust and fairness in the system.
