As a skilled professional living and working in the Netherlands, I would like to respectfully share my concern about the proposed extension of the naturalization period from five to ten years.

I chose the Netherlands not only for its opportunities in technology and innovation but also for its strong values of equality, education, and human decency. My family and I moved here so that our children could grow and learn in a fair, stable, and inclusive society.

I have brought with me valuable professional experience and knowledge, and after arriving in the Netherlands, I also completed a second Master’s degree in Environmental and Sustainability Studies to further align my work with the country’s green ambitions. Every week, I dedicate 40 hours of responsible, high-quality work to contribute to technological progress and sustainability in this beautiful country that I now proudly call home.

However, this proposed change feels deeply unfair to many of us who made life plans based on the current five-year rule. After more than three years of residence, we suddenly face a new rule that shifts the goalposts halfway through our journey. This undermines the sense of legal stability and fairness that attracted many skilled migrants here in the first place.

Such unpredictability risks discouraging educated, experienced professionals from building their future in the Netherlands. It raises important questions: Are the contributions, dignity, and rights of skilled migrants being fully recognized? Has the potential long-term impact on the economy and knowledge transfer been carefully considered?

I sincerely hope that the government will take these concerns into account and preserve the trust and motivation of those of us who chose to invest our future in this wonderful country
