I would like to express my deep concern regarding the proposal to extend the required residency period for naturalization from five years to ten years. Many of us have built our lives and long-term plans in the Netherlands around the system that has been in place for years. Personally, I made the conscious choice to settle in the Netherlands—over other countries such as the United States—because of the legal certainty and stability it offers, as well as its long tradition of respect for rights and the rule of law. Changing the rules in this way, especially after years of residency and investment in the country, would be deeply unfair to those of us who are already close to fulfilling the current requirements. Some of us are only one year, or even a few months, away from eligibility. To suddenly move the goalposts would undermine trust in the system and penalise people who have already demonstrated commitment and integration. I urge you to consider the real human impact of this proposal. If changes must be made, they should at least respect the expectations of those who have already begun their residency period under the current framework.
Thank you.
