Dear Sir/Madam,

We have been following with concern the discussions about extending the residency requirement for citizenship from 5 years to 10 years. As a family who has been living in the Netherlands for over three years as highly skilled migrants, we are very grateful for the opportunity to live here and contribute to society.

From the beginning, we have done our best to integrate: our child has attended a Dutch school since our arrival, and we have been taking Dutch language courses ourselves. We feel very happy here and hope to continue living in the Netherlands for many years.

At the same time, it is important for us to feel secure about our future. While we understand that there may be valid reasons for considering a longer residency period, applying such a change to people who are already settled in the Netherlands feels discouraging and unfair. We kindly believe that if such a rule is to be introduced, it would be more appropriate to apply it only to those who choose to come to the Netherlands after the change has been made.

When we decided to move here, we were aware that citizenship would be possible after 5 years of residence. Changing this rule for families like ours, who have already made this commitment, would be devastating.

We sincerely hope that the perspectives of current residents will be taken into account. We look forward to continuing to live in the Netherlands with a sense of security and peace of mind, while contributing to the well-being and prosperity of this country.

Thank you very much for your attention and consideration.

Kind regards
