I am an international professional who has made the Netherlands my home. Like many others, I came here not only for career opportunities, but because this country represents openness, fairness, and a deep respect for people from all walks of life. Over the years, I’ve built my life here my work, friendships, and sense of belonging have all grown from the welcoming spirit that defines the Netherlands.

That’s why the proposal to extend the residency requirement for citizenship from five to ten years feels so disheartening. For many of us, the idea of becoming Dutch is not just about a passport it’s about feeling truly accepted and being able to call this country home in every sense of the word. Changing the rules now would leave many skilled migrants in uncertainty, questioning whether their efforts to integrate and contribute are genuinely valued.

The Netherlands has long stood as a symbol of inclusion and progress. I hope it continues to do so by keeping the five-year path to citizenship. It’s a policy that allows people like me to build our lives here with trust, stability, and a shared sense of future.
