I came to the Netherlands as a highly skilled immigrant, hoping to find not just a place to work, but a place to call home. The Netherlands promised to offer such a home to those who contribute, adapt, and embrace its culture, and that is exactly what I have been doing. Yet being an immigrant is not easy. It takes great effort, patience, and emotional resilience to build a new life from the ground up. Five years is already a long and demanding journey toward belonging. Extending the naturalization period to ten years would make this journey unnecessarily discouraging and would diminish the value of the commitment and contribution that people like me make to this country. I value the Netherlands deeply, and I believe that recognizing the efforts of those who choose to build their future here is essential to keeping that mutual respect alive.
