I came to the Netherlands under the Start-up Visa program to establish my company and contribute to the Dutch innovation ecosystem. During my stay, I have fulfilled all legal obligations, paid taxes, and created value here. One of the main reasons I chose the Netherlands was its clear and supportive policy toward international entrepreneurs and the predictable five-year path to permanent residence and citizenship.
Extending this period from five to ten years would discourage start-up founders from staying long-term, weaken integration incentives such as learning the Dutch language, and increase administrative and financial burdens for the government.
Most importantly, many of us came here based on the current five-year rule and planned our careers, investments, and personal lives accordingly. Changing the law midway would be unfair and undermine legitimate trust in the Dutch immigration system.
Even if the proposal is eventually adopted, fairness requires that those who entered the Netherlands under the five-year expectation remain subject to the current rule. I respectfully urge the government to reconsider or, at least, to make this distinction explicit in the final legislation.
