Extending the naturalization requirement from 5 to 10 years blindly for all expats/immigrants sends the wrong message and discriminates against hard working tax paying skilled migrants who came to the Netherlands to build a better future for their families and feel a sense of belonging in the country they sacrificed a lot to move to.
The (illegal) immigration problems are valid and can be tackled in many ways, but this is not one of them. Five years is more than a long enough period for skilled educated expats to fully integrate in NL. My wife and I for example, have both worked, paid taxes and passed our dutch exams already within 4 years of moving to NL and have been looking forward to finally apply for naturalization and finally feel we have a new home. This law would destroy our dream. At the very least, this law should apply to newcomers who would already have this expectation and know that NL has a 10 year requirement before moving, not to families who have been living for several years awaiting the 5 year mark. Another option would be a year or two transition period for people already close to integrating.
Thank you for taking these concerns for the thousands of highly skilled migrants who gave so much for this country into consideration.
