Dear policymakers,
I would like to express my concern about the proposal to extend the naturalisation period from five to ten years.
For many of us who live and work in the Netherlands, this change creates additional uncertainty and pressure. People on residence permits are often required to find a new job within three months if their employment ends. Extending the naturalisation period to ten years means that even long-term residents who are fully integrated, contribute taxes, and are part of Dutch society will remain in a vulnerable position for twice as long.
This proposal risks discouraging skilled professionals from building their lives here. It sends the message that even after many years of participation in Dutch life—working, paying taxes, volunteering, and contributing to local communities—we are still not considered settled or secure.
Naturalisation is not just a legal formality; it is a symbol of belonging. Extending the waiting period undermines that sense of connection and stability. A five-year period is already sufficient to demonstrate commitment and integration, and increasing it to ten years would only add unnecessary strain to working individuals and their families.
I urge the government to reconsider this proposal and to maintain the five-year requirement for naturalisation.
Kind regards,
Shreeishita
