Extending the naturalisation period in the Netherlands would be unreasonable and unjustifiable because it delays the integration of migrants into Dutch society and creates unnecessary barriers for those who are already contributing members of their communities. Lengthening the path to citizenship prolongs uncertainty for individuals and families, making it harder for them to fully participate in civic life, access equal rights, and build long-term stability. Citizenship is not only a legal status but also a crucial factor in fostering belonging, loyalty, and social cohesion. By extending the waiting period, the government risks marginalising people who are eager to integrate, which can undermine social trust and slow down successful participation in the labour market, education, and local communities. Instead of extending the naturalisation period, policies should focus on supporting integration efforts that help people become active, engaged citizens sooner.
