I am an international professional currently living and working in the Netherlands. Like many other expats, I chose this country for its openness to highly skilled migrants and its strong values of diversity, innovation, and global collaboration.

The proposal to extend the residency requirement for Dutch citizenship from five to ten years is deeply concerning. Such a change would create significant uncertainty for many skilled migrants who have built their lives, careers, and long-term plans around the existing system. It could also weaken the Netherlands’ ability to attract and retain international talent at a time when expertise and innovation are vital to the nation’s economic growth and competitiveness.

A fair, stable, and predictable immigration framework is essential to maintaining the Netherlands’ reputation as an inclusive and forward-thinking country. I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal and to uphold the current five-year pathway to citizenship — a policy that fosters integration, stability, and a mutual sense of belonging between skilled migrants and Dutch society.
