I strongly oppose the proposal to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years. Such a measure would undermine integration efforts by delaying the sense of belonging and civic participation that citizenship provides. Many immigrants especially those coming with HSM visa, contribute meaningfully to Dutch society long before five years have passed, and prolonging their exclusion from full rights is unjust and counterproductive.
Moreover, the current five-year pathway to naturalization has long been a key factor in attracting highly skilled professionals and expats to the Netherlands. Many individuals and families made their decision to relocate, invest, and build their future here based on the expectation of a fair and reasonable route to citizenship. Changing this fundamental condition retroactively would not only be deeply unfair but could also damage the Netherlands’ attractiveness as a destination for global talent.
This change would place the Netherlands at odds with European norms and risk creating a divided society where long-term residents remain outsiders. The current five-year period is sufficient to ensure commitment and integration, and extending it would only create unnecessary barriers for individuals and families striving to call the Netherlands their home. I hope a country like Netherlands will not take this step.
