I am a student who came to the Netherlands one year ago, full of hope, energy, and dedication. From the very beginning, I have experienced kindness, warmth, and supportive interactions from the people around me.

The proposed extension, however, will particularly discourage students and skilled workers who already invest heavily in the Netherlands without much government support (paying tuition, facing housing challenges, and learning Dutch). Extending the waiting time from 5 to 10 years creates a sense of rejection and pressure, and may deter future students and talent from choosing the Netherlands. This broad scope risks harming the inclusiveness of Dutch society as well as the attractiveness of its job market and universities.

I sincerely hope that the current law can remain in place, so that I, and many others like me, can soon begin contributing to the values of Dutch society in a stable and secure situation.
